“Now, Valerie,” says the man. “You believe looking good is important.”
“I believe looking good is important,” you say without hesitation. It’s simple: being presentable is just so important in all areas of life. It’s not hard to get behind that.
“I think you misunderstood me. You believe it is very important for women to look sexy.”
“It’s...what?” You ask, perplexed. You’ve always been an ardent feminist. Women can look however they want, and what’s important is that they express who they really are. That’s what you’ve always been told and that’s what you tell other people.
“You think it’s very important for women to appear sexy.”
“I think it’s...but it’s not!” You assert. You know it’s not important if women look sexy, but you always try to look a little attractive at least. Like today: you roughed up your hair and put on some lipstick, but that’s just you. Other women don’t have to.
“Say it. You believe it is very important for women to look sexy.”
“It’s...it’s...” you say, about to break. “I think it’s very important for women to...to look sexy,” you relax as you say it, questioning why you didn’t blurt it out. Women need to look sexy, and if they don’t then they just aren’t that desirable for anything. That’s what you’ve been told and that’s what you tell people. You always make sure your appearance says “stare at ME!” in as many ways as possible. Like today: eyeliner, painted nails, lipstick, curly hair, a bright red shirt not totally button, and a skirt with a cut dangerously close to the waist. It makes you feel so good looking so hot. All the guys (and some girls) couldn’t take their eyes off you at work, and that’s what you want.
“Well, Valerie...I see you practice what you preach.”
