“My friend Angie would be good,” you say. Angie was your friend who lived a town over; you two were close but not too close. “She’s not as confident as she should be...maybe you could help with that?”
The man smiles wide. “Of course I could! Say, why don’t we go help her out right now?”
“Oh, we?” You ask, confused. “Wouldn’t you want some...privacy? She lives a town over, too, but I could give you her address and num-”
“Your friend Angie,” the man says, swinging his pendulum. “Lives next door.”
“My f-f-friend Angie l-lives...next d-door?” You ask, now entranced. That’s not right at all; you guys don’t even attend the same school, and your next door neighbors were the Creightons, that elderly couple.
“Yes Valerie. You two have always been next door neighbors.”
“Always b-been...um...next door neighbors...” you say slowly, beginning to correct yourself. The Creightons fade from your memory, as Angie had always lived right next to you...that’s how you guys became best friends! You guys grew up together and were always inseparable; you even discussed going to the same college if you both got in.
“And you want to come with me to help your next door neighbor.”
“I want...I want to come with you,” you affirm. Of course you wanted to go and see Angie get a little confidence boost. She’s your bestie and she lives right across the street.
“Ready to go?” The man asks as he lowers his pendulum.
“Yes yes yes!” You say with glee.
The two of you walk across the street and knock on Angie’s door.
“Val! How are-oh, and you are?” She questions upon opening the door.
“I’m Kurt,” says the man, finally saying his name. “Your friend Valerie here thought I could help you.”
“Uh, OK. What’s this about?”
