“And, um, Vanessa,” adds Kurt. “Valerie here is your direct subordinate.”
“My...my what?” Asks Vanessa, suddenly confused.
You too are puzzled as your head starts to hurt again. You don’t know this woman Vanessa, you are sure of it... but she now seems familiar, almost. Why do you remember her at work? Why do you recall sitting in her office? As your mind fogs up, you fail to notice your outfit has changed back to your office one.
“Your direct subordinate, dear,” Kurt reiterates. “Valerie is your direct subordinate.”
“Valerie...is my direct s-subordinate!” She asks. As she does, things start to get clearer. Vanessa WAS your boss. She has to be. You remember shaking her hand when you started here at YCorp all those years ago. Even then, she was everything you wanted to be: powerful, authoritative, and efficient. Her one flaw was her humility; she didn’t put much stock into her appearance like you, and therefore diminished her own value in your eyes. It’s a shame, since she’s already naturally beautiful, but nevertheless, she was your boss...at least, you are starting to believe she was.
“Yes, Vanessa! Valerie works directly beneath you.”
“She works...directly beneath me...” your boss repeats. Your headache is mostly lifted as you remember the day Vanessa made you her number two. She saw something in you, she said, and she knew you’d one day lead YCorp when she retired. From then on you two have done a great deal together, and you couldn’t be prouder.
“But...” begins Kurt. “You don’t like each other.”
“We don’t like each other? But w-we are...a team...” mumbles Vanessa, sounding unsure. For what it’s worth, you know you do in fact like Vanessa. Sure, the two of you had some fights, and you never liked her always calling you vain, but to say you two didn’t like each other...
“You and Valerie hate each other,” says Kurt, leaning in closer to Vanessa. “Say it: you hate each other.”
“Oh...Valerie and I hate each other,” says Vanessa, and isn’t it nice to hear it from the horse’s mouth. You two just despised each other ever since you met, and the only reason Vanessa hasn’t fired you is because there’s no one else in the company who could replace you. It’s a rocky relationship that is forced to continue on, and it seems to get worse by the day. Oh, you can’t wait until this bitch retires!
“Alright, that’s enough,” says Kurt, releasing your boss from trance. As she stumbles back to consciousness, and you get over your headache (and glare at Vanessa while you do), Kurt sits back and watches as you two deal with these radical changes.
