“Now, Tammy,” Natalia begins, slowly. “You’re smart.”
“Uh…smart?” She asks, all but rejecting that idea. You had to give her props for being self-aware, but Tammy definitely wasn’t the brightest bulb in the box. She told you she dropped out of high school because she got pregnant, after all.
“Yes, you are smart.”
“Smart…I’m smart…” she agrees in a hushed voice. Oblivious to your memories shifting slightly, you’d have to agree with that statement. Tamara wasn’t a genius or anything, but she definitely had a bit of a brain. She graduated high school and college and manages the local department store. Tammy has certainly has carved out a nice little living on her own, and it took some smarts for sure.
“Not just smart,” Natalia adds. “Remarkably smart.
“Re…remarkably smart…” she says, sounding more confident. Her house tidies itself up behind her, and she’s now wearing a nicer version of her outfit: high-end jeans, expensive shoes, and a proper green top. Glasses also appear on the ridge of her nose, and her headband disappears. She has a sort of intellectual look…and why wouldn’t she? You know Ms. Prince is a savvy businesswoman with a high-ranking corporate position for a big department store chain. She always gave you discounts whenever you needed to get something, which you thought was very sweet.
“You are a English professor at my university,” says Natalia, only continuing.
“English professor? But…b-but…” Ms. Prince protests, taken off guard. She once mentioned she minored in English, but it was just a small area of interest. But then again, why did she talk about it so much?
“Yes, you are an English professor.”
“Yes…I am an English professor…” Dr. Prince murmurs, her posture straightening. Her appearance is much cleaner and academic, wearing a black sweater, plaid skirt, and black heels. Her house is also smaller, but a lot nicer-looking. The memories you have of her undergo a dramatic shift; she has a master’s in English, only a minor in business, and was a pretty well-respected English professor. You and her often talked about books you two read, and she always told you how she was enamored by how intellectually gifted you were, and how you were probably (already) smarter than her.
“And,” says Natalia. “You’re my intellectual equal.”
Dr. Prince’s body shudders. “Intellectual…e-e-equal…” she murmurs, sounding almost overwhelmed. Her appearance doesn’t change, but (unknowingly) your memories do. Natalia and Tamara (she hated formalities) were your tutors. Both of them were brilliant scholars who were well-connected in the world of higher education. With Tamara handling more of the humanities and Natalia tackling math and science, they served as giving you an added education throughout your life, making sure your natural genius never went to waste. They were equally smart, and as such their respect for each other was apparently at all times, which is why Natalia suggested trying the pendulum on Tamara.
Glancing at Natalia, you try and remember anything about Tamara that wasn’t always true (like with Mei) but…this is how it’s always been. Natalia couldn’t have made a change…right?
