Before you could even react, he turns back to Mei.
“Mei, you are smart,” he tells her.
“I…I’m smart…” she agrees, sounding pretty modest. You knew Mei was smart, and not because of the stereotype. She actually was pretty brainy, always doing better than you did in school.
“Very smart.”
“Oh…I…I’m very smart,” she says, softly.
“You’ve always been very smart, Mei.”
“I-I’ve always been v-very smart,” she says with some amazement in her voice, her annunciation much improved. You start to get a flow of new memories again, this time of Mei being the biggest nerd on the face of the Earth. She was always babbling on about useless information, skipping out on parties to study, or making you feel dumb by comparison. She was still your best friend, but obviously you two were very different, though you always respected how smart she was. Her clothes also become more modest, now just jeans and a sweater. A smartwatch appears on her wrist.
“You’re a genius, Mei.”
“A g-genius? Me?” She asks, almost taken aback by the word.
“You’re a genius, yes. A genius.”
“I’m…a g-genius…a genius…” she mutters, visibly disoriented. Her outfit changes yet again, being replaced by a cute yellow crop top and a matching plaid skirt. She’s also now cradling brooks in her arms, never without at least one on her. Her makeup is also heavier, as she always wore it nicely since she was good at it. But honestly, what wasn’t she good at? You remember her being a prodigy at a lot of things: piano, calculus, physics, history, writing, and much more. She’s going to freaking Harvard next year, for crying out loud, and she’s undecided only because she’s great at everything! She’s, well, a genius! It’s really hard being her friend sometimes since she is such a nerd, but she is super nice and you two can have fun together. At least, that’s what you remember.
Gordon, still swinging the pendulum, shoots you an excited, almost sadistic look. He turned your friend into a total dork! As twisted as messing with her life has been, at least she’s very, very gifted…
