Turning his attention back to Mei, he begins to speak to her again.
“Of course, Bella has shown she’s a smart girl as well,” he says, glancing over at you.
“Oh…y-yes, Bella is a smart girl…” Mei confirms. That means a lot coming from someone like her, even if she’s entranced. You know you’ll never be Mei, but you aren’t dumb by any stretch. You were an A and sometimes B student. If you really tried, you could sometimes keep up with Mei, which was quite the feat.
“You’ve always been impressed with how smart Bella is,” he says to her.
She winces for a brief moment. “I-I’ve…always been impressed with how smart Bella is…” mutters Mei. Your head, instead of hurting, feels like it’s being tickled. New knowledge is being shoved in to your head, from how to use the power rule to every king of France to the names of every element on the periodic table. You’re getting smarter…a lot smarter!
“You were always remarkably impressed with how smart Bella is.”
“Remar…r-remarkably impressed…”
Even more knowledge flows into your head as your memories start to change. You remember school being somewhat of a joke, always getting As without much effort, though you rarely weren’t doing something related to academics. You and Mei were two of the smartest students in your area, and while your bestie was always just on another level, you weren’t that far off. You two always competed intellectually in science fairs, spelling bees, trivia bowls, poetry contests, and chess tournaments just to name a few. She always got the better of you, but she always said that you were the only one to challenge her. You love her to death, obviously, but being second fiddle isn’t all that great. You remember the embarrassment when she got into Harvard and you didn’t, and you had to settle for Cornell, the “worst Ivy.”
“In fact,” begins Gordon, smiling. “Bella might even be smarter than you.”
“Bella…i-isn’t s-smarter t-than m-me…” Mei manages, looking as if she is in pain. You, on the other hand, get a massive head rush and you just keep getting smarter and smarter, becoming an utter genius. At the same time, your personality also begins to shift from a bubbly extrovert to a shy, humble introvert. You don’t know why Gordon is doing this, but you aren’t complaining.
“Don’t be afraid to admit the truth,” he tells her. “Bella might just be smarter than you.”
“Ughh…Bella m-might be…might…b-be…”
On top of the boost to your IQ some drastic changes start to occur. A giant bookshelf appears behind you, containing many sophisticated volumes. Your clothes morph into a simple yet cute white dress with matching sneakers. Your memories change even further, with you having shown for years to be Mei’s foil and beaten her at tests of smarts many times when you two were younger. Your friendship has now masked a bitter rivalry that only got intensified when you both got into Harvard.
“Mei,” says Gordon, patronizingly. “Bella is smarter than you.”
Bella lowers her head, defeated. “Bella…is smarter than me…”
You let out a little laugh as you finally hear the words you’ve craved to hear for years. Your IQ rises another few points as your recall always having a step on Mei. When you got into MIT and she didn’t, she nearly had a hissy fit even though she herself got into Harvard. Your friendship is held together by a thread, with your intellectual superiority always driving Mei nuts.
“My goodness…my whole life is completely divergent…” you say, so amazed at your new mind. You can still remember not being this brilliant, but only slightly. Gordon looks at you with great enthusiasm, enamored at how drastically he changed you indirectly.
