After what seemed like an eternity, she gives her response.
“You can keep the pendulum on one condition: you erase our relationship. Make it so I never met you.I want my hands wiped so clean of this whole mess that they were never dirty to begin with.”
It greatly saddens you to here Mei say this, especially since you know that her feelings are the product of Gordon’s tinkering. However, this is reality now, and her demand is one that you feel obligated to honor.
“Alright Mei. I accept your terms,” you tell her, raising the pendulum. “Now…hold still…”
Mere moments after you begin to swing the pendulum, she’s back under. You figure with your suggestion matching her wishes, the process should go a lot faster.
“Mei…” you begin, reluctantly. “You never met me.”
Her entire face twitches, but you also notice a smile starting to form. “I…I n-never…” she begins, the change clearly too much to process at the moment. It’s likely only a matter of time, perhaps even with one more repetition.
“You never met me,” you say again.
“I never…I never met you,” she sighs, relieved. Her mind has to be completely rid of you. What’s fascinating is that your memories do not change, which must be because you are holding the pendulum and your change is directed at Mei. It makes you happy that you will remember her, but also a bit sad, too.
“You have no idea who I am,” you tell her, wanting to make sure the change is absolute.
“I…of course I have no idea who you are…” she says, sounding confused. That has to prove that your suggestion did the trick. However, you aren’t quite finished.
“You moved to my neighborhood a few days ago. You visited my house just to say hi.”
“I moved to your neighborhood…a few days ago…” she mumbles. “I visited…j-just to say…to say hi…”
Just to tie up any loose ends, you figured it be smart to provide rationale as to how she never me you. Feeling satisfied, you sorrowfully lower the pendulum.
“Are you alright?” You ask a frazzled Mei.
“Oh…oh yes. That pendulum you took from that creep really works,” she says, now fully alert and at ease. “He’s gone, right? Good thing we were able to get rid of him without any trouble.”
You tug at the hem of your dress nervously, almost unsure how to interact with her. “Of…of course! Thanks for volunteering, I guess,” you say. “And he is all gone, so no worries.”
Mei smiles. “That’s good. Who knew coming over to say hi would be enthralling? Well, I better get back, but it was a pleasure meeting you…um…I seem to have forgo-”
“Bella. Bella Romano,” you interrupt her, giving her your name for what must be the “first” time.
“Mei Li,” she responds in kind. “I’ll see you around!”
She exits your household, and you can’t help but feel so hollow. She’s just a stranger now.
Being honorable came at a price.
